ENTTEC lighting ushers in a new era for an iconic Melbourne venue.

Prince Bandroom LED pixel dot ceiling

The iconic Prince Bandroom in St Kilda has elevated its live music experience with the addition of a cutting-edge LED lighting system.

The goal? To create an immersive space where light and sound collide, amplifying every beat and electrifying the atmosphere.

Since the 1950s, the Prince Bandroom has been Melbourne’s heartbeat for live music, hosting legends from Nick Cave and Midnight Oil to Billie Eilish and Glass Animals. It’s more than just a venue — it’s a living testament to the city’s vibrant musical heritage.

In just one month, Lloyd Gibbs and his team at Lotron Electrical, alongside QLC+, transformed the Bandroom’s ceiling from a blank canvas into a dynamic light show. Starting with precise line tracing, 3,072 ENTTEC Smart PXL 60 dots were installed, each carefully fastened for maximum impact.

Powered by eight OCTO controllers and brought to life with ENTTEC’s industry-leading ELM LED mapping software, the result is a bold, ever-changing spectacle that moves with the music and keeps the crowd coming back for more.

Tales from the vault

EVO: ENTTEC’s lighting console adventure

Looking not unlike a groovy late-1970s drum machine with its stylish timber sides, the EVO was ENTTEC’s core venture into the world of more traditional lighting consoles.

Officially launched in February 2002 at the Entech AV trade show at Darling Harbour, Sydney, the EVO was packed with features and geared towards Ethernet networking.

Heralding new technical advances, such as ENTTEC’s proprietary technology EasyCom™ (which spelled out every command in a simple sentence) and an onboard effects creator, the EVO was a breeze to program.

Outputting up to 4 universes of DMX data, it was available in three factory colours (red, blue, black), or whichever custom colour you liked. The EVO also sat at an incredibly attractive price point, offering and often beating the features of many much more expensive big name lighting desks.

The ambidextrous companion: the EVO EXPANSION WING came out in late 2003, allowing for  faster control of features through multiple faders and user defined keys.

Do let us know if you have any memories of the EVO. We always love to hear about the different ways in which our products have helped to create a success story.

The EVO console line was ultimately discontinued in 2006 when ENTTEC decided to focus more on the emerging technology of software-based lighting control systems rather than big, old school desks. But we had fun while it lasted!

What’s more, the wing was marketed – quite accurately – as the only lighting console that specifically took left-handed users into consideration!

Vintage magazine ad: Comic Sans unironically ruled the roost in the early 2000s.

Nobody could accuse the EVO of being dull: available in a bright red finish, it wasn’t exactly the sort of device you were likely to lose in a dark alleyway.
