St Kilda newcomer kicks a goal with its ENTTEC lighting system.
A sports bar fit for a local legend
Named in honour of St Kilda’s eight-time All-Australian AFL legend Robert Harvey, the recently-opened Harvey’s Sports Bar & Grill in St Kilda, certainly has the right ingredients as a social destination for the sports-mad Melburnian.
Project manager Justin Mackay and his team from Factory Sound used ENTTEC’s UL Listed LED Neon Flex strip to create a vibrant ceiling centrepiece for one of the venue’s themed bar rooms.
Programmed and controlled by an ENTTEC S-PLAY SP-1 show recorder, different lighting states can be operated by staff at the touch of a button: anything from a luxurious white while you’re tucking into the American BBQ platters on offer, to a multicoloured LED pixel extravaganza for celebrating when your team kicks a goal on the big screens that surround the space.
The S-PLAY’s assorted lighting states, shows and playlists reach the Neon Flex thanks to an ENTTEC Pixelator Mini and a series of PLink Injectors, converting the S-PLAY’s DMX Art-Net output into LED pixel protocol. The beauty of the Pixelator system is not only its lightning-fast Ethernet speed, but that it can carry large amounts of data with no loss of integrity for distances of up to 300 metres. That’s certainly farther than the bar’s dual Brownlow medallist namesake could ever kick a footy!
So if you’re in town over Summer, do head down to 169 Fitzroy Street and check the place out. Maybe grab a pint and catch a spot of Australian Open tennis action while you’re at it.
With lighting ambience as good as this, it may not beat sitting courtside at Rod Laver Arena, but it’s surely the next best thing.

A bright success at IAAPA in Florida

DMX PlayBack: the original light show recorder
Since its launch five years ago, ENTTEC’s versatile S-PLAY show controller has cemented its place as a firm favourite among professional designers and installers.
Having the ability to record, edit and play back not only light shows but other automated events – either by programming or via external triggers – has seen the S-PLAY series integrated into lighting installations across the globe.
The story of the S-PLAY, however, began a quarter of a century ago in Melbourne, Australia, when ENTTEC conceived and released its first DMX512 show recorder, the groundbreaking DMX PlayBack.
Launched with a retail price of USD $350 in the year 2000, the industry had never experienced a lighting controller so packed with handy features at this price point before.
Perfect for unattended or automated shows, the DMX PlayBack could store up to 26 shows with a 1U DMX output and could be operated by any RS232-capable device. You could even use your PalmPilot (remember those?!)

Compare that with today’s S-PLAY SP-1 which can store 200 playlists and play back 32U using Art-Net/sACN!
Times and expectations may have changed, but it was the pioneering technology within the original DMX PlayBack and its 2005 evolution, the DMX PlayBack Mk2, that paved the way for the state-of-the-art engineering that we see in the S-PLAY series today.
